Workshop Frequently Asked Questions

Is this workshop right for me?

I’m sure you have questions about my Technique or Themed Writing Workshops, how they work, and if they're for you, so here are the answers to my most frequently asked questions.

What are you going to cover?

How does it work?

What if I can’t attend that day?

Is there a replay?

What if I don’t have any writing skills?

What if I don’t want to be a professional or published writer?

What if I've never tried writing before or haven't written in a really long time?

Do I need to be a parent to attend this workshop?

Yes! I'm ready to get started writing!

What are you going to cover?

If you enjoy the free writing tips I share weekly via my podcast and Facebook group, you’ll love these workshops that focus on themes and writing techniques. They take everything to the next level with real-life examples, engaging conversations and writing activities, and group support.

READINGS

During each, we'll discuss a few pieces of published work that either exemplify a specific writing technique or explore a specific theme. And we'll read a few excerpts together during the workshop.

If your workshop mentions pre-reading materials, then you'll receive an email with those files after you complete registration. I don't try to overwhelm you with too much reading, but I do aim to expose you to different ideas.

WRITING TIME

The workshops also include writing exercises that piggyback off the readings to help us explore those writing methods on a personal level. I aim to offer a variety of prompts so you'll have plenty to ponder and experiment with, even after you leave the workshop.

DISCUSSION

Be a fly on the wall, or join the conversation. Regardless, the workshops encourage a fun, safe, open-minded discussion about the reading materials, our perspectives, and what we discover during the writing exercises.

How does it work?

These workshops are held virtually for 2 hours (though we usually run a bit over because I make sure to answer your questions).

The workshops toggle between discussing the reading materials—e.g., the techniques being used, what appealed to us, what may not have, etc.—and experimenting with writing exercises that will help you learn how to apply those skills.

After the writing exercises, you can unmute, decide if you want to share a nugget or two, ask questions, and just have a good old time. This is a safe, judgement-free zone and a great chance to connect with other parents.

I welcome all writers, regardless of their level of experience or preferred genres.

What if I can't attend that day?

No problem. You have two options. First, you can register for this workshop, and you'll have 30 days to watch the reply.

Second, each time I offer a workshop, I change the day of the week and time. Let me know you want to attend and when you’re usually available, and I’ll make a note to notify you about the next date. You can also sign up for my newsletter so you'll know ahead of time what I'm planning.

However, keep in mind that I don't know when I'll offer the same theme or technique again.

Is there a replay?

Yes, the workshop is recorded via Zoom.

If your plans change and you cannot attend live, you will have 30 days to access the replay.

What if I don’t have any writing skills?

What? Of course you do. Really!

Writing isn't about picking that one perfect idea and drafting the next great novel. It's about experimenting, releasing your creative self, expanding your perspective, and giving yourself a safe space where you can just be you. Above all else, it should be fun.

Use this workshop to uncover your hidden writing skills and—should you wish to share your ideas someday—the stories within you that other people desperately need.

And, surprise, you can use the workshops' writing prompts to explore different genres.

You have something special inside you. You and your unique perspective matter. And I’ll encourage you the whole time, so you can feel excited and fearless when writing, whether for yourself or others.

What if I don’t want to be a professional or published writer?

Writing isn’t just for the professionals or those who want to publish.

Writing can be just for you. Expanding your perspective can be just for you. Releasing your creative self can be just for you. And using writing as a safe space can be just for you.

You don't have to be a professional writer to enjoy the camaraderie, engaging conversation, and new ideas you'll gain from this workshop.

What if I've never tried writing before or haven't written in a really long time?

No problem!

Reading, surrounding yourself with encouraging people, and actually putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) are the best ways to grown as a writer. This is also a great way to dust off your pen, stretch your fingers, and jump back in.

Sometimes it takes someone from the outside to let you know what you can do. Sometimes we need others to help spark our belief in ourselves again.

Do I need to be a parent to attend this workshop?

No, you don't.

Even though the workshops are hosted by the Parents Who Write podcast, we all have creativity within us, aching to be expressed, and if the podcast or my stories have inspired you to unlock yours, then I'm honored to have you join this journey.
